The Ognjište restaurant near Podgorica is one of the few places to offer an authentic ispod saca roast. This staple dish for Montenegrins consists of slow roasted meat and vegetables cooked on hot coal for several hours. They serve veal, lamb and turkey ispod saca, which is less commonplace. I recommend the turkey, my friends have never refused a second helping.

Aside from ispod saca, other Montenegrin specialities are served including chorba – a thin soup, grilled meats, fresh salads, and local red wine.

The restaurant is located on the road to the Ostrog monastery. The monastery is best visited on an empty stomach, followed by a hearty meal at this riverside institution.

Inside the restaurant there is an indoor section, in the old building, and an outside space. In winter, only the indoor section is open. In summer, most diners choose to eat on the terraces, which are elevated above the river. There are between one and four tables on each terrace. At the front is a small landscaped garden with a pond, on the river bank.

The interior is very homely and a great place to relax and enjoy being surrounded by nature. From the terraces you can spot freshwater trout and flocks of white ducks.

The staff speak Russian and are very friendly. Their traditional red waistcoats are in keeping with the country style of the restaurant.
