[1] Traveling from Ulcinj and Bar to Podgorica, you can take a toll road via the Sozina tunnel. It will save you ~22 km and increase the traveling speed (up to 80-100 km/h). More on Montenegro tunnels here.

[2] Land route (via Perast). Sea ferry at the Veriga strait will save you ~30 km, which require 40-45 minutes to travel by land. Despite that, the time spent at the ferry can vary from 15 minutes to 1 hour and 10 minutes, depending on the season and the time of day. More on ferries in the Ferries section.

[3] The route via Berane. There is a direct road that connects Kolašin and Andrijevica. It shortens the route by 46 km. Still, it is a road with hairpin bends through mountain passes, which is closed in winter and requires great care and driving experience even in summer. See winter road map in the Maps section.

* The route via Šavnik. There is a mountain road that connects Žabljak, Trsa, and Plužine. It is shorter by 48 km. The road is closed from November to April and requires great care and experience even in summer. See winter road map in the Maps section. In the summer, it is one of the most beautiful roads in the north of the country. It one of Montenegro’s must-see routes.

.

At the end of 2010, a new road was opened between Risan and Nikšić. It shortens the trip from the Bay of Kotor to central and northern Montenegro. Though the speed limit is rather low, 80 km/h, you can exceed it, as it does not go through populated areas and there is still little traffic. The distances from Herceg Novi, Tivat, and Kotor to Nikšić, Plužine, Danilovgrad, and Žabljak in the table above are based on this road.

Note that the average speed on Balkan roads is about 45-50 km/h.
